WHAT IS PROGETTOMONDO?

Progettomondo is an Italian NGO founded in 1966, committed to counter various forms of poverty and inequality on a global level. We started in Latin America, and today we are active with our development and human rights interventions in North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa as well. In Italy and Europe, we actively promote Global Education and other forms of mobilization and public awareness, on climate change, in favor of intercultural dialogue and in the struggle against all forms of discrimination, racism and xenophobia. Throughout our history we have involved around 1.000 development workers and volunteers, engaged in more than 450 projects in 24 countries. Our headquarters are in Verona, Italy, and we have national offices in all the countries where we work. Local groups from different Italian regions participate in the life of the organization. We are promoters and active members of local, national and international networks, including the Federation of Christian Organizations of International Voluntary Service (FOCSIV) and the Association of Italian NGO (AOI).

ACTIVITIES

We promote projects and initiatives in international cooperation and solidarity in Africa and Latin America, Global Education in Italy and Europe, and awareness campaigns and volunteer experiences, which allow us to carry out our “world project”. We always plan and implement our actions together with the partners of the countries and territories where we work. These actions are included in medium and long-term programs aimed at producing long-lasting changes. Currently, we are committed to four areas of intervention: Justice, Sustainable Development, Migration and Global Education.

MISSION

Progettomondo intends to be an agent of change, builder of alliances, promoter of exchanges between people and dialogue between cultures, by affirming the principle of co-responsibility. We mobilize to reduce economic and social inequalities within countries and between different areas of the world. We work to ensure that those who suffer from poverty, violence and discrimination, and the new generations, become leaders of their own development and contribute to improving the conditions of the societies in which they live and of the global community.

VISION

In our “world project” all people affirm their dignity without distinctions and obstacles to the exercise of their rights.

VALUES

By overcoming the logic of aid dependency, we respond to the needs of the communities and countries where we work, enhancing existing resources, valuing diversity and achieving impact that lasts over time.

For these reasons, we work together with local associations and institutions, with other actors of international development cooperation and solidarity, by building a partnership system that shares the same objectives and is committed to achieving them with us. We believe that global phenomena such as climate change, migration and inequalities, in and between countries, affect everyone, and that each of us is called to overcome them. We strongly believe in the value of co-responsibility in order to build a common “world project”.

Justice, Sustainable Development, Migration and Education for Global Citizenship (ECG) are the four focus areas in which Progettomondo is currently working on.

Suistanable development

Progettomondo aims for equitable and sustainable development in the countries in which it intervenes. This means encouraging economic sustainability by focusing on leveraging the development of local markets to generate income and ensure adequate living standards, ensure gender equity in wages, promote decent work, and contribute to the overall growth of communities.
The organization is aiming to achieve social sustainability, which means increasing the mental and physical well-being of populations by expanding conditions of social protection and security, access to quality education, appreciation and respect of culture and language and environmental sustainability, meant as the capacity to manage, conserve, restore, enhance, recover, and reproduce natural resources threatened by inadequate production patterns and climate change.
The 2030 Agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals represents a global challenge for Progettomondo, which has the principle of co-responsibility as its pivot. The NGO operates in Haiti, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Honduras, Nicaragua, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Congo, Niger, and Mozambique, and has always encouraged experiences related to the modes of intervention promoted, with a fundamental role given to local organizations.
Justice
Progettomondo has always been committed to the defence of human rights, in a variety of situations and contexts, ranging from the protection of those who promote them, to the protection of the rights of indigenous peoples, to the recovery of the historical memory of populations that have been victims of persecution and armed conflicts, to access to justice for specific social groups and the promotion of restorative justice for young people in conflict with the law.
The organisation is also involved in the promotion of youth empowerment, the exercise of citizenship rights, political influence, and the prevention of radicalisation of young people, all of which fall under the major theme of access to justice, particularly for groups, sectors and peoples who are denied it.
The NGO is active with projects dedicated to justice in: Bolivia, Honduras, Haiti, Morocco, Burkina Faso, Niger.
Migration
Progettomondo firmly believes that Migration is a phenomenon to be tackled in an integral logic, acting on the causes – poverty, wars, famine, climate change – and taking into consideration the real needs to rebalance problems of global economic inequality and demographic disproportions.
The organisation is particularly active in Morocco and Peru, respectively the first non-European and Latin American communities in Italy. It also promotes global citizenship education, anti-discrimination and socio-cultural integration of migrants.

Global Education

The ‘European Declaration on Global Education to 2050’ outlines a common strategy to strengthen global education, emphasizing social and climate justice, solidarity, equity, planetary sustainability, and international understanding. It reaffirms principles while introducing new terms and commitments to promote inclusion, education for schools open to the world and solidarity, and increased opportunities for young people to exercise their citizenship. The declaration aims to make global education a right for all European citizens through shared goals and tireless work. It represents the lens to understand Progettomondo’s commitments through its three programmes: promoting inclusion and opposing all forms of discrimination, fostering education for open and global-minded schools, and increasing opportunities for youth to exercise their citizenship. This declaration aims to establish shared goals and alliances for quality global citizenship education, as a right for all European citizens and people worldwide.
